Expeditions is a free application available for download on your mobile device, it offers the ability for educators to use both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) within their classrooms.  Expeditions allow students to explore the world while remaining in their seats or bringing the world into the classroom.  This application gives the ability for educators to incorporate creative, innovated, and exciting content or curriculum within their classrooms.  There are over 900 VR tours and over 100 AR tours available within the application.  Additionally, educators and students can create their own experience with “Tour Creator”.  Expeditions offers visual learners an advantage to learn while interacting with there classmates.

Currently there are several higher education organizations that have implemented Expeditions within their curriculum.  One is the United States Military Academy “West Point”.  An assistant history professor used Expedition to teach students about European History and Western Civilization during the 2017 to 2018 academic year.  The Cadets were able to view on their personal devices and appreciated the ability to see the terrain and human factor instead of seeing it on a textbook.  Article link list below.

I was unaware of this free application available for both teaching and learning.  I recently downloaded the application and was able to bring the seven continents into my office space.  I was also able to take a VR tour of the Great Wall, allowing me to get a 360-degree view.  I believe this application is a great tool to incorporate in the learning environment to assist students in gaining a better visual understanding of their content.

  1. Billy,
I also was unaware of this free app, but it sounds great. I'm going to have to download it and check it out. The way you describe it, it seems like it would be great for history or geography teachers to use. My question for you is, do you see this type of technology being used in other school subjects?

    1. Michaela,

It is a free and easy app to download and use, I recommend you try it. There are a variety of topics to view. Some other school subjects that can utilize this app are Art, science, anatomy, and probably many others. Those are some of the few subjects that I saw available. I am sure with time, there will be even more options. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog.

  2. Billy,

I like your topic of choice. In many ways it reminds me of certain simulators on military installations. The first one that came to mind was the EST weapons trainer and then the convoy live fire simulator, the unstabilized gunnery platform and even table VIII training. All of those resources offer a training and education experience like no other and really are training and readiness enhancers. What you said about being able take a virtual tour of the great wall of China , having a realistic 360-degree view sounds intriguing and educational. I agree, it seems as though this application of learning could take you across a variety of landscapes, allow you to tour, and educate all at the same time without leaving your assigned seat in the classroom. Thanks for sharing

  3. Erric,

You bring up some great points, not only are they readiness enhancers but they are quite fun and entertaining as well. Being able to train using simulators helps replicating real world scenarios. Thanks for reading my blog and posting!!

  4. Billy,

Very interesting and exciting topic- especially where you laid out the application named "Expeditions." I immediately downloaded and have access to the tours you spoke about. I think this would be very helpful and enhancing in the sciences department of education, namely social studies, history, and science itself. The content would take on a very different meaning with the AR being part of it for those learners that like visual learning means. Great topic.
